Online Yoga Studio

Perhaps you’re curious about yoga, but intimidated by the thought of a traditional studio environment. Or maybe the accessibility of doing yoga in the privacy of your own home would make it easier for you to practice more often.

Rooted is a virtual yoga studio where you can connect to body and breath at your own pace and on your own schedule.

In this space, we approach yoga from a trauma informed perspective, where each movement is an opportunity to make empowered choices and to deepen your connection with yourself. Trauma sensitive yoga is an effective healing modality that doesn’t require any talking. All you need is a mat, your body, and your willingness to show up.

The freedom to practice with choices, without judgement (my own), and Elena’s compassion and patience are exactly what I have needed for my body. Every week I become more aware of my growing sense of groundedness.

Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD, specifically designed for complex trauma.

  • It is a gentle, movement-based yoga practice that uses a mat and/or a chair. During the practice, we don’t talk about trauma, as the focus is on the present moment experience of the body.

  • As you move through the physical forms and movements at your own pace, you are invited to notice sensations in your body, such as the feeling of your muscles engaging or stretching.

  • Every movement and yoga form offered is always completely optional, and you are always offered choices for how you want to engage with each form.

  • It doesn’t matter what it looks like—you won’t be pressured to conform a particular “alignment” or “right” way to do it.

  • One of the key aspects of TCTSY is the emphasis on the internal experience, rather than the external expression or appearance of the yoga forms. This shift in attention from the external to the internal is a crucial element of what makes TCTSY an effective complementary treatment for complex trauma.

Shame is a really prominent feeling for me in my life, and I’m very conditioned to think about what I SHOULD do, as opposed to what I genuinely want to do. This practice has been so helpful for me in practicing choice and having agency. I can show up and practice in the ways that feel useful for me that day. There is truly no right or wrong way to practice.

I’m often unable to make live classes, so having recordings makes it possible for me to practice at all. I think Elena does a really tremendous job with the online format, because she still brings that in-person energy and it feels very welcoming and supportive. I like virtual classes also because it takes away all the pressure of looking or being a certain way.

Frequently asked questions:

  • It varies widely!

On average there will be one per calendar week. Some weeks there will be more than one, sometimes there will be less.

What will always be consistent is that a new recording will be uploaded every single week.

Since the schedule varies, the virtual yoga studio works best for folks who are comfortable using recordings. That said, please feel free to come live whenever it fits your schedule!

  • The practice begins right on time, so you might plan on arriving a few minutes early.

In the 10 minutes before and after, you have the option to un-mute yourself to say hi, make requests, or provide feedback. This will not be recorded. During the recorded portion of practice everyone will be muted so that there are no interruptions.

Throughout the whole experience it’s always up to you whether to have your camera off or on. Both options are equally welcome. Even if you choose to have your camera on, you will not be part of the recording. Only my screen gets recorded.

  • That’s up to you!

When I offer trauma sensitive yoga outside of this virtual yoga studio, I usually charge $15-18 per practice. So, if you’re able to do 2 yoga practices per month, that’s a roughly equivalent value. But of course you’re welcome to do more!

You also might consider that most of the peer-reviewed research on TCTSY studied participants who attended live weekly classes for 10 consecutive weeks. Feel free to make use of this information if it’s helpful to you as you plan your practice schedule.

  • A yoga mat can be helpful, although some people prefer using a blanket or towel.

I also invite the optional use of a chair, folded blanket, or pillow as a support in many practices. However, they aren’t required.

As for clothing, feel free to wear whatever feels comfortable. “Yoga clothes” are not necessary. Sweatpants, pajamas, or literally anything that you feel comfortable moving in are all equally good!

  • You are welcome to cancel your membership any time for any reason, and you are always welcome back!

When you cancel your plan you will continue to have access to all the membership content for the rest of the payment period. Please be sure to cancel before your next payment period begins so that you aren’t charged again. Although I strive to be as accommodating as possible, please understand that I can’t guarantee a refund after your card has been charged for a given month. Thank you for being mindful of this!
